CAIRN TERRIER PUPPIES - BEAUTIFUL AND AKC REGISTERED

The Internet is a wonderful tool, but it can be a little overwhelming
when searching for the right Cairn Terrier puppy for you and your family.
After careful consideration to purchase a puppy, we hope you will consider
A and J Kennel when making your decision.
The decision to purchase a Cairn Terrier puppy should not be taken lightly.
Make sure your entire family has the time and patience to devote to a puppy.
After all, a puppy is an important part of the family and will be for many
years to come. Puppies need lots of love with daily care, training, and
attention from you. Caring for your puppy means you must provide a high
quality food, fresh non-chorine water, his own bed in a year-round comfortable
area he can call his own, and regular visits to your veterinarian. Hopefully,
you will also have a fenced in yard for the safety of your puppy with enough
room for lots of exercise and fun time.
A and J Kennel began on May 9, 1990. We are in good standing with AKC

PUPPIES WILL HAVE: AKC registration, dewclaws removed,
first shots/worming, veterinarian checks, at about 6 weeks and again when
getting their health certificate before shipping, two-year limited
guarantee, and a copy of the sire's and dam's pedigree. References will
be sent upon request. (Vaccinations/worming are given according to the schedule
at the bottom of this page). Shipping options are available to most major
airports in the continental USA. (See our shipping prices below).
SPAY/NEUTER: We recommend that you have your pet spayed
or neutered, at a time decided by your veterinarian. Females are usually
spayed at six to eight months, males four to six months. We do not require
a spay-neuter contract, but the AKC puppy paper will be marked AKC limited
registration for pets only. If breeding options are desired, the potential
breeder will be screened, and full AKC registration is $100.00 higher than
the limited registration pet price. (See prices below).
PICTURES: Pictures of the puppies will be posted in
the available
puppies gallery when the puppies are at least a week old (we don’t
like to disturb mom too soon after she has her babies). When new pictures
are taken (about every two weeks) the album will be updated with the new
pictures of the available puppies. New pictures will also be sent to our
customers, so they can see the progress of their puppy.
FOOD: Our puppies are fed NutriSource Puppy Food, starting
at about 3 to 4 weeks of age. Our puppies are weaned at about 7 weeks of
age. All of our customers receive NutriSource Puppy Food packs. For puppies
that are shipped, the food is placed on the top back of the carrier. For
puppies that are picked up at our home, the food is given to our customers
at pick up.
GETTING PUPPY READY: A few days before the puppy is
ready to go, generally at 9 weeks old, we take the puppy to our veterinarian
for the final vet check and health certificate. Puppies are bathed and groomed
a day or two before being picked up here, or shipped by air. If a puppy
is shipped, the carrier is prepared with all appropriate labels, shredded
paper for absorbency, and food and water (ice-so it melts slowly) inside.
Food packages will also be sent on top of the carrier. For puppies that
are shipped, the vaccination record will be under the shipping label on
the top front of the carrier, and an extra copy of the vaccination record
will be sent with the AKC papers. For puppies that are shipped, we will
send a detailed message explaining everything, including the flight information,
and pick up location. I also send a message with puppy tips on care (via
e-mail) for puppies shipped by air, or the puppy tips are printed out and
given to the customer, if the puppy is picked up at my home. When a puppy
is picked up at our home, the customer provides the pet carrier. In most
cases, we do not deliver puppies by car.
THE PAPERS: The puppy's AKC Dog Registration Application
(puppy paper) an extra copy of the vaccination record, the guarantee (2
copies, one for you to keep and one for you to send back to me) and a pedigree
will be mailed by regular mail or placed on the top back of the carrier
under the food. For puppies picked up at my home, the papers will be given
to the customer. Make sure you read, sign and date both copies of the guarantee.
When you take your puppy to your veterinarian for the initial exam, you
are required to get a note from your veterinarian on the condition of the
puppy, and return it to me with my copy of the guarantee. Make sure you
have your veterinarian SIGN AND DATE THE NOTE, because the date on his note
proves the puppy was examined within the required time. The note can say:
"I found the puppy to be in good health". A copy of your veterinaian's
statement may be sent as proof the examination instead of a note.

CAIRN TERRIER DISCRIPTION:
The Cairn Terrier is a long lived dog, weighing about 12 to 16 lbs. with
a body length of 14-15 inches and a height from the shoulder of about 9
to 10 inches. The coat is thick, with a harsh outer coat and a soft undercoat.
All colors are acceptable, except white, with a dark mask and tips being
desirable.
The Cairn Terrier is probably best known in America as Dorothy's little
Toto on the Wizard of Oz.
The Cairn Terrier makes a wonderful pet, and is at home in the city and
country, being smart, robust, loyal and loving. Cairns are brave and headstrong,
and benefit from discipline and obedience training.

CAIRN TERRIER HISTORY:
This little dog is descended from the working terrier of the Isle of Skye.
The Skye Terrier group included the Scottish Terrier, the West Highland
White Terrier, and the Cairn Terrier. Because of confusion over the classifications
of the Short-Haired Skyes, the name for the Cairn was changed to Cairn Terrier
of Skye. Until 1923, England's standard permitted Cairns and West Highland
Whites to be interbred. This cross was also practiced in the United States.
In 1912, the name was shortened to Cairn Terrier, and the breed was allowed
to compete for challenge certificates. The American Kennel Club recognized
the breed in 1913, but in 1917 the AKC banned registration from the Cairn
Terrier and West Highland White Terrier cross.
The name Cairn means a "Heap of Stones" depicting the landmark
type rock piles so common in Scotland. The "Cairns”, or piles
of stones, were a natural home for small animals. Farmers used the well-equipped
Cairn Terrier, with their strong teeth and larger front feet (better for
digging!) to seek out the various vermin from their rocky homes.
Today's Cairn Terrier is a hearty little dog that should be as close to
the original old time working Cairn as possible.

*Please note that the AKC papers will be marked limited registration for
the pet price. Limited registration means that you cannot register the offspring
of your dog or show for conformation (a spayed or neutered dog is not eligible
to be shown for conformation). Limited registration dogs are eligible for
other AKC events.
If you plan to use the dog for breeding/showing for conformation, with
full AKC registration, then arrangements for this option must be made in
advance. Full registration is $100.00 higher than the limited registration
pet price.
If you decide to purchase a puppy from A and J Kennel, a $100.00 (non-refundable)
deposit will hold a puppy for you. The deposit is applied to the purchase
price. Payment can be made (with prior notification to make sure a puppy
is available) by U. S. Postal Money Order, PayPal (from the PayPal site
using my e-mail address) or with a personal credit card over the phone.
(Visa or Master Card, personal credit cards only). Personal checks are accepted
only for puppies less than 4 weeks of age. If the final payment has been
made in advance, the paperwork can be completed before the puppy is picked
up. On puppies shipped by air, final payment must be received at least 10
days before shipping. All the shipping arrangements will be sent to our
customers in a detailed message.
SHIPPING CHARGES:
$245.00 is charged for shipping related expenses to most major airports
served by American Airlines. Continental Airlines is sometimes used to major
airports—only the large Continental jets are pressurized for puppies.
Delta Airlines is higher.
Shipping Charges include: Air fare, the pet carrier, our transportation
cost to take the puppy to the airport, and the research time and paperwork
for shipment. When a puppy is picked up at our home, the customer provides
the pet carrier. In most cases, we do not deliver puppies by car.
All arrangements for shipping will be sent to our customers in a detailed
message explaining everything. Since there are more passengers and less
room for puppies on weekend flights, we generally do not ship on weekends.
We generally ship on Tuesday through Friday, depending on the weather and
the customer's location.

Vaccine / High Titer
Your veterinarian should continue the vaccinations and wormings every
3 to 4 weeks until the puppy is 18 to 20 weeks of age, or a schedule recommend
by your vet. Your veterinarian will also decide on an appropriate time for
the rabies vaccine (at about 12 weeks of age) the best time for spaying
and neutering, flea and tick prevention, and any other treatment the veterinarian
recommends.
